Murphy wildlife control Tip of the Month:
How to find and remove a dead house mouse
Having a dead mouse rotting away somewhere around your house is put simply, problematic. The very idea of sleeping in the same vicinity as that of rotting animal flesh is vomit-inducing. Moreover, the risks to your health caused by the mere presence of a dead mouse are no laughing matter, which is why you need to remove it from your property at once. To that end, here is a list of everything you need to keep in mind before taking on the job.
Suit up
If you’re going to be close to a decaying mouse’s carcass, you’d better be prepared. Wear clothes that cover much of your body, leaving as less of your skin exposed as you can. Be sure to cover your face and hands using a face mask and gloves. Also, equip yourself with a spray bottle of disinfectant, bought from the store or prepared at home with bleach and water, and deodorant with a strong odor.
Tracking the dead mouse
While it may be highly unpleasant, the best way to track down a mouse is to “follow your nose,” going around your house sniffing for where the rancid smell of decaying flesh is the strongest. You can even use the mouse’s history as a guide; remembering what rooms you saw or heard the most would speed up the process. The carcass also attracts insects that feed on it, so keep an eye out for those. Unless you’re lucky enough to find the carcass in an easy to reach place, the dead mouse is probably inside your walls or floor, so be prepared to cut those up in your search. Also, keep in mind there may be more than one carcass, so be sure to check again after locating/dealing with the first.
Disposing of the carcass
Scoop the dead mouse into a plastic bag, using your mercifully gloved hands, and seal the bag before carrying out of the room, to avoid the smell and airborne germs from infiltrating the rest of your house. You can then choose to either dispose of the bag by throwing it into the trash, or by emptying its contents into a deep hole in your garden, covering it with mounds of earth.
Cleaning up afterward
Once you’ve dealt with the carcass, you need to clean the spot where you found it before you can call it a day. Be sure to scan the area around for any dried blood or fluids that may have leaked from the dead mouse, and clean those areas, along with the main spot, thoroughly with water and disinfectant. Ventilate the area to let the bad smell disperse, spraying some of the deodorants for good measure. Lastly, don’t forget to wash your hands (or even better take a bath) when you’re done.
